SDW opposes new election act

Former auditor general Sheila Fraser slammed the Harper Government’s proposed changes to the elections act yesterday.

She’s got some local support for her comments.

Stratford Democracy Watch is opposing the ‘Fair Elections Act’ also.

Leslie Catling is an organizer with the local watchdog group.

She says Fraser is one of many experts questioning the changes.

Catling says the legislation threatens the reputation of Elections Canada.

The proposed bill would, among other things, end the practice of someone vouching for the identity of someone else who may not have photo ID.

Frasier said yesterday that this is simply not a problem in Canadian elections.

Critics say the proposed law could disenfranchise 500,000 Canadians.
