PED pounds American pork producers

On a positive note; there are no new cases of PED to report this morning.

Unfortunately, the full devastation this nasty virus has wreaked on pig farmers in the US is becoming clear.

The US Deparment of Agriculture estimates the overall pig herd for the entire country has shrunk by three per cent since last May.

That’s when Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea first surfaced.

Since then, six million piglets in 27 different states have died.

Economists believe America’s overall pork production could drop by seven per cent this year.

PED has hit 47 farms in Ontario and has spread to Manitoba, Quebec and PEI.
