Local school in the running in national challenge

Downie Central School is in the thick of the “Spread the Net Student Challenge”.

Started by Rick Mercer the goal is to raise money to buy bed nets which will be donated to places that need them. Those nets are crucial to preventing the spread of malaria, a disease that kills 600,000 people a year.

So far Downie Central has raised $8,500 putting them fifth in the national standings. If the school wins they’ll earn a visit from Rick Mercer.

The final results will be announced in the second week of March.
