New law to bring changes to council

A new provincial law is going to bring some changes to Stratford City Council.

In its second reading, Bill 68 is expected to pass next spring and is meant to modernize Ontario’s Municipal Legislation Act. Council heard a number of the coming changes at Monday’s meeting.

They include measures to reduce the “lame duck” period for councils in election years, an expansion of when council can go in camera and harsher penalties for councillors who don’t declare a conflict of interest.

There will also be an increase to the individual donor ceiling from $750 to $1,200, a mandatory integrity commissioner, and councillors being allowed to attend meetings via electronic devices. A councillor who choses to attend the meeting digitally, however, would not be counted towards quorum.
