Senior conned out of $13,000

It’s a new twist on an old scam.

Woodstock Police are warning people after an 81-year-old woman was taken for $13,000 by a man pretending to be someone he wasn’t. Police say the man got in touch with the woman over Facebook claiming to be an injured member of the United States Army who was in the hospital.

They struck up an online friendship and the man started asking for money to cover medical costs and eventually a flight to Canada to visit the woman. This went on for several months.

The police are reminding people to be on the lookout for these kinds of scams and to never send money to anyone you don’t personally know.
