USDA Raises Questions Over Canadian Meat and Dairy Inspections

Auditors from the U-S Department of Agriculture have raised significant questions about Canada’s meat, poultry and egg inspection systems.

Perth-Wellington MP John Nater says if the USDA suspends meat and dairy imports from Canada it will have a huge negative impact on local agriculture.

Nater is expressing serious concerns over the timing of the findings as Canada is heading into NAFTA negotiations next week with the U-S and Mexico.

He says the CFIA will have to tackle the inspection issues quickly so as not to weaken Canada’s position at the negotiating table next week.
