Program expanded to control spread of PED

As porcine epidemic diarrhea spreads, the Area Region Control and Elimination Program is being expanded.

It has been effective at dealing with blue-ear pig disease in the province.

Officials think it may help slow the spread of PED.

The program would enable producers to share information better and work together more closely than they normally would.

The Ontario Swine Health advisory board has received money to fund the program for another couple of years.

PED has hit 57 farms in Ontario including six in Perth, 11 in Huron and 10 in Oxford.

The virus is not contagious to humans and does not impact meat quality.
