Council Votes to Declare 48 Water Street as Surplus

Stratford City Council has voted 10 to one in favour of declaring 48 Water Street, which houses the Tom Patterson Theatre and the Kiwanis Community Centre, as surplus.

Councillor Kerry McManus, the only member of council opposed to the declaration, read a letter from a concerned resident.

McManus and the author of the letter resonated some of the public’s concerns regarding public access, the importance of the city’s parkland and the impact its sale could have.

Mayor Dan Mathieson explains some of the logistics moving forward and how it ties into the proposed redevelopment of the Tom Patterson Theatre.

CAO Rob Horne says staff will now be working on that possible deal, tackling recommendations such as public access or whether or not it would be an outright buy from the Festival or a lease from the city.

Mathieson says it could be less than a month before council comes back with a recommendation on a deal.
