Athletes from across Ontario and from as far away as New York State and Michigan are descending upon our city this weekend for the Stratford Kendo Club Invitational Tournament.

The tournament is a joint effort between the Forest City Kendo Club, the University of Western Ontario Kendo Club and the Stratford Kendo Club and will feature a sport that combines martial arts and swordsmanship with participants using bamboo sticks to strike one another while wearing lots of protective armour.

Derek Barr with the Stratford Kendo Club says the tournament grew out of wanting to share the sport with others.

It’s being held Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School starting at 8:30 a.m. and runs throughout the day.
