Investigation launched after man dies in police related incident in perth east

An investigation has been launched by the Ontario Special Investigations Unit after a 61-year-old man was killed in an altercation with police in Perth East.

A release on the OSIU’s website says police were called to a home in Rostock just before 5:00 p.m. Saturday over reports of a domestic situation.

Members of the Emergency Response and Tactical Unit arrived on scene, encountered the man, contained him and started negotiations.

At some point plastic projectiles from a weapon usually used to control a crowd in a riot was fired and a short time later the man suffered a gunshot wound.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:15 p.m. and the OSIU says they believe at this point that the only weapon fired by police was the anti riot device.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is an arms length agency that’s called in when there’s a police related death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
