Deer meat confirmed as source of E. coli in Oxford County

Four cases of E coli in Oxford County and a neighboring county have been confirmed as coming from processed deer meat.

Oxford County Public Health says a laboratory has confirmed the results after they inspected the meat which they say was sourced from private hunts and processed privately, at a non commercial facility, into cured sausage products.

The first case of E. coli in the area was reported in mid-February with a second report coming a month later and two more identified in April.

They say after they identified the deer meat as the suspected cause they sent nine samples to a public health laboratory and all tested positive for E. coli.

Public Health says they have followed up with everyone who had access to the contaminated meat and told them to dispose of it and the hazard has now been contained with no risk to the general public.
