Stratford can move ahead with developing Cooper Block

It’s a huge win for the City of Stratford when it comes to the future of the Cooper Block.

In a unanimous decision, the Divisional Court has dismissed the former owner of the blocks appeal in its entirety meaning the city can now develop the property with the only issue left to be resolved being just how much will have to be paid out to the former owner.

That issue will be solved through the Ontario Municipal Board.

Stratford Chief Administrative Officer Rob Horne says now the focus can turn to the the best way to develop the block.

“We are looking to develop a new community hub on the site which would include a University of Waterloo Student Life Centre, a new active seniors complex, a new YMCA, there will be a new Stratford Transit terminal built on the site this year.”

Horne adds the city will also look to add more parking in the block which he says is in demand in the downtown core.
