Blaze breaks out at demolition site of Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford

No one was hurt but Stratford Firefighters were kept busy after a blaze broke out at the demolition site of the Tom Patterson Theatre.

Firefighters were called to the theatre on Lakeside Drive around 1:30 p.m. Thursday and when they arrived they found smoke and flames showing prompting them to call in a partial second alarm to get more crews to the scene to get things under control.

Stratford Deputy Fire Chief Neil Anderson says the fire was put out quickly.

“It was a very quick knock down, it’s mostly superficial and nothing suspicious, they just did some extension checks through the attic just because the smoke and flames could travel through there and not much more damage other than that.”

Anderson adds it’s believed the fire was caused by sparks coming from a pipe that was being cut.

Work at the site has been stopped until it’s deemed by the Ontario Ministry of Labour that it can restart.

An inspector is expected to be at the site on Friday.
