You’re being warned to take steps to avoid West Nile Virus

With summer here, you’re being warned to protect yourself from West Nile virus.

The Perth District Health Unit says West Nile virus is a disease that is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and many of those infected with it will have mild or no symptoms at all.

However, PDHU says those infected who have weaker immune systems and people with chronic diseases are at greater risk for serious health effects.

The health unit says that since 2012 there have been four lab-confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Perth County and in 2016 six deaths were associated with it across Ontario.

Some tips to avoid the virus include getting rid of standing water around your home, farm and workplace at least once a week and using insect repellent containing DEET on clothing and exposed skin.

You can go to www.pdhu.on.ca to learn more about how to prevent the virus.
