OPP conducting seatbelt safety campaign this week

Air bags are not a replacement for seatbelts.

That reminder from the Ontario Provincial Police who are hearing up for their Fall Seat Belt Campaign.

So far this year, OPP say they have investigated 34 road fatalities across the province in which the victims were reportedly not wearing seatbelts, that number is up from the 30 deaths recorded at the same point last year.

Police say that when a frontal collision launches those in a vehicle toward the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield, even at low speeds, without a seatbelt the outcome can be catastrophic even if the airbag deploys.

During the campaign, the OPP will be highly visible throughout the province as they conduct education and enforcement initiatives aimed at getting people to buckle up and stay safe.

Driving without a seatbelt can result in a fine of up to $1000 and the loss of two demerit points.
