Perth County OPP officer cleared after man injured during arrest last year

A Perth County OPP officer has been cleared of any fault after a man was injured during an arrest last year.

Around 12:30 a.m. on August 25th, the Ontario Special Investigations Unit says police were called with reports of a suspicious man in Mitchell at the Tim Hortons.

When police arrived on scene the man was gone and his vehicle was later found and stopped on Highway 23 between Mitchell and Monkton.

The SIU says two police cruisers boxed the vehicle between them and when the officers went up to the vehicle the man reversed his car and smashed the cruiser parked behind it.

According to the SIU, one of the officers shot his gun as the man drove off with it the vehicle later spotted on Highway 7 traveling towards London at around 7 a.m.

A report says the vehicle was then boxed in again with the man’s vehicle striking a tree and then he tried to run off but was arrested when an officer used a taser.

The SIU says it was discovered in the hospital that the man had a broken clavicle but on Tuesday SIU Director Tony Loparco ruled that the officers responded to the situation reasonably and did not use excessive force against him.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that is called in to investigate when there are situations involving police resulting in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
