Perth-Wellington MP cautiously optimistic about new continental trade deal

The MP for Perth-Wellington is taking a wait and see approach to the new continental trade deal between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the new deal is good and stabilizing for Canada, and American President Donald Trump hails it as a breakthrough for American workers.

However, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer accused Trudeau of “capitulating” to Trump and backing down on protecting Canada’s dairy farmers, and on control of our auto industry and prescription-drug prices, concerns which John Nater is also keeping in mind.

Nater says it’s vital to have a deal in place but we have to see how it plays out.

“The United States is our largest trading partner, nearly 80 percent of all trade internationally is with the United States, one in five jobs is because of trade, so I really want to hope that it’s a good deal but like anything, the devil is always in the details.”

The New Democrats also accuse Trudeau of “caving in” to Trump and getting a worse deal than NAFTA.
