Optimism Place Women of the Year Awards a Great Success

Eight women from Perth County have been recognized for their contribution to the lives of their community members.  The eight were honoured at the 20th Annual Optimism Place Women of the Year Awards on Friday night at the Arden Park Best Western.

Over 300 people gathered to celebrate their achievements.  The evening began with musical entertainment from St. Mary’s own Delaney Brooklyn, who was the 2018 Stratford Stars winner.

Actors Marion Adler and Roy Lewis emceed the event.

Former CBC Radio news host and audio-biographer Judy Maddren was the guest speaker.  Maddren spoke passionately about the opportunity she has had to tell the stories of real people throughout her career.  She spoke about the fact that every life is memorable, and every woman has a story to tell no matter what their stature in life.

Each honouree was told, “You are an extraordinary and inspiring woman who lies in Perth County.”

The evening also included live and silent auctions.  No word yet on how much the evening raised for Optimism Place.

The evening’s honourees included:

Community Service Award:

Honouree Keara Flood: From a young age Keara was inspired to be the “Change she wished to see in the world”. She is a true change maker.  Her intrinsic motivation has inspired adults and young people in our community by her humble example.

Business Professions and Trade:

Honouree Trena Hough:  through her rapidly growing business “The Pulp”, and other efforts locally, Trena has demonstrated a positive impact on her community.

Arts, Culture and Heritage:

Honouree Dayna Manning: is known as a recording artist, songwriter, singer, producer and sound engineer who’s mentored young girls In Dayna Manning’s Folk Army, inspiring each of their own individual style and journey.

First Responder:

Honouree Sue Blacklock: OPP Provincial Constable Sue Blacklock has been a leader paving the way for women in policing since December 1987.  Sue is admired by her colleagues for her calm demeanour and her commitment to volunteering in her community.

Julia Wilkinson Sports and Active Living and Wellness Award:

Honouree Jeny Moses: and her husband founded LiveWell4Life, a wellness centre in Mitchell.  Jen is a role model to many, and her leadership has inspired many in the community to reach their fitness and personal goals.

Agriculture, Environment, Science, and Technology:

Honouree Dr. Marcie Lee McCune: is a caring and astute woman who performs hundreds of surgeries in our community every year. She does so with a steady hand, compassion, strength and female empathy.

Education:

Honouree Melissa McIntosh: has been a well-respected Educational Assistant for over 20 years in our community. A year ago, Melissa stepped away from teaching to create “Mindful Kids”, a program to support children with anxious and busy brains.

Anne McDonnell Woman of Courage:

Awarded to Debra Jackson: First Class Constable Debra Jackson has been with the Stratford Police for 28 years and has directly contributed to improving the lives of women experiencing violence in our community.
