New Report Finds Not Enough Being Done To End Domestic Violence Locally

We aren’t doing enough to put an end to domestic violence in our area.

That’s the message from the Stop Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee of Perth County who recently put out a report that looks at domestic violence and recorded incidents in the first six months of this year in the Stratford area.

It found that there were 3,963 calls to mental health crisis helplines based around domestic violence and it also found that police have been called to 393 domestic violence situations which lead to 59 men and 2 women being charged.

Lisa Wilde is with Stop V.A.W. and she says we need to support those who experience violence in these situations.

“Use your voice, it’s 2018 and women who experience violence still believe they’re not supported, that they have no one to turn to, that this is a small community and everybody is going to know their business, so I would say be a supporter, first and foremost be a supporter, let people know that you’re there to help.”

The report has been sent to Stratford City Council and stats will now be gathered province-wide and sent on to Premier Doug Ford before eventually going national and to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
