Stratford Police Officer cleared in 2018 collision that injured one person

A Stratford Police Officer has been cleared by the province’s police watchdog in connection to a collision last year.

The Special Investigations Unit announced on Friday that they have ruled that the officer wasn’t responsible for injuries that passengers suffered in a collision in late January last year that saw a vehicle strike a tree.

The SIU says an officer was on patrol on January 31st when they vehicle driving without working taillights.

They say when the officer turned on his emergency lighting to stop the vehicle, the vehicle accelerated and fled with the driver failing to make a turn, mounting the sidewalk and hitting a tree.

SIU Director Tony Loparco ruled that there were no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against the officer in the incident.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is an arms-length agency that’s called in when there’s a police-related death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
