Canola front of mind for Federal Conservative Agriculture Critic in Stratford

The Federal Conservative’s Agriculture Critic says it’s incredible that the Liberal party won’t have an emergency debate on canola.

Luc Berthold was in Stratford Thursday morning with Perth-Wellington MP John Nater to help serve breakfast at the Canadian Dairy XPO and he took time out to talk about his efforts to have a debate on canola which has become a part of a rising trade dispute

between China and Canada.

China has said it has found pests in canola from Canada and has made quality complaints against three Canadian canola shippers with authorities in our country seeing it as retaliation for Canada arresting a Chinese tech executive in Vancouver at the request of

the United States.

Berthold says the Liberal party has blocked three requests he has made for an emergency debate on the issue.

“Not just for canola farmers, not just for producers, for all the economy, this is a $27 billion input in our economy for each and every year.”

The Federal Agriculture Minister says she sent a letter to her counterpart in China asking to send a high level delegation from Canada to talk about the issue.

Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece was also on hand to help serve breakfast Thursday morning.
