Couple fall victim to “mystery shopper” scam

A local couple is out thousands of dollars after getting conned.

Stratford Police say they fell victim to the “mystery shopper” scam.

It sees the victim deposit a cheque into their account for a few thousand dollars, pose as a shopper at a store, then wire the balance of the cheque back to the person who “hired” them.

In the end it turns out the cheque is fake and the victims have wired their own money to the scammer.

The Stratford Police want to remind people that these scams are common, and if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
