Stratford Police officer assaulted during call over the weekend

Stratford Police say one of their officers was assaulted during a call over the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon around 3:30, police say an officer reported seeing a group of males on bicycles in the downtown area causing a disturbance.

The officer tried to stop the men but lost sight of them as they went behind a building and the officer later found one of the bicycles abandoned behind the building.

Police say the officer was inspecting the bike when a man approached her and demanded to have the bike back.

A second officer came to the scene as the man became aggressive and during an altercation, the first officer was struck in the head by the man who had a cast on his wrist.

Police say the man also attempted to spray a bottle of pop at the female officer and he was eventually arrested without anyone getting injured.

The 24-year-old male was later charged with assaulting police and Theft Under $5-thousand.

He was later released from custody and has a court date scheduled for June 10th in Stratford.
