Share the road with cyclists.
That’s the message Stratford Police are sending as they say there are more and more people riding bicycles through the city with the weather turning warmer and summer on the way.
Police say that bicycles are treated the same as vehicles and those riding them must follow the same rules on the road.
Stratford Police Constable Darren Fischer says there are a few things drivers need to keep in mind when they are around cyclists.
“A driver must give one metre of space when passing the bicycle, also I want people to be aware of something called dooring, it’s when your car’s parked and you’re opening up your door and you don’t allow that time or space for the bicycle to pass you before you open up your door and the cyclist hits your door.”
Fischer adds that cyclists are required to be as close to the right side of the road as possible and that all bicyclists should remember to wear a helmet, with those 18 and under being required by law to wear one.
