Convenience store employee credited with saving elderly woman from fraud

An employee at a convenience store in Stratford is being credited with preventing an elderly woman from being a victim of fraud.

Stratford Police say they got a call just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday from an employee at the 7-Eleven store on Erie Street who reported a 78-year-old woman trying to purchase $1500 in gaming gift cards.

At the store, police say they learned that the woman had received a request from what she thought was her bank to pay a debt of $1500 to them with gift cards.

Police say the employee at the store told the woman that she was being scammed and the purchase was never made.

Stratford Police are encouraging everyone to speak to their friends, neighbours and family members who could be at risk and educate them about the dangers of fraud.
