Tovenati, Leonard

Leonard Gerardus Maria Tovenati, age 94, passed away peacefully with family by his side in the Stratford Perth Rotary Hospice on Thursday July 25, 2019.

Leo was born April 21, 1925 in Geleen, Limburg, Netherlands; son of the late Vincent Tovenati and Margaretha Mulleners.  He was the first of his family to come to Canada in June 1951.  He travelled extensively throughout Ontario as a salesman for Jack Hood School Supplies where he met both of his wives.  Beloved husband of the late Grace Tovenati-McDonnell for 15 years and the late Joan Tovenati-Coulthart for 20 years.  He is survived by his sister Bernadette Tovenati-Dols (Netherlands) and his sisters-in-law Berta Tovenati-Kruitwagen (Australia) Jean McDonnell and Margaret Gert-Watkins and brother-in-law Alphons Meagher.

He is predeceased by his brothers Antonio (Twain), Joseph (Zeph) and Peter (Pierre) Tovenati and sisters Elisabeth (Elly) Vossen and Maria Gulikers; his sisters and brothers-in-law Evelyn Tovenati-Wilkinson, Martin Gulikers, Pie Vossen, Jan Dols, John and Alice Dewan, Tom McDonnell, Joe and Rita McDonnell, Rita Meagher-McDonnell and Don Girt.

He is lovingly remembered by his step-children and family, his many nieces and nephews in Canada, Netherlands and Australia and especially by his godchildren Ellen Koert and Cynthia Stangl.

Leo loved his church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was an avid golf and bridge player, and he lived his last years at Greenwood Court and will be missed by his many friends he made there.

Visitation at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford, on Sunday, July 28th from 3-7 p.m. and on Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 96 Huron Street, Stratford from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Vince Gulikers and Fr. David Butler followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.  The Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service Sunday at 2:45 p.m. Interment will be at a later date in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford.  As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth or St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church through the funeral home.  519.271.7411  www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
