Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson and city councillors could see a pay increase

Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson and city councillors could soon see the amount they make go up.

Last year, city council voted to create a citizens committee to review and provide recommendations on the pay that the Mayor and councillors receive and Monday night they reported back to council at their regular meeting.

The committee says they took factors including the federal government eliminating the one-third exemption on taxes for members of municipal councils into account.

They are suggesting that the city adjust the pay levels of the Mayor and councillors so that the net pay from the city is the same as it was before the loss of the exemption, which would see Mayor Mathieson’s pay go from $66,869 to $77,212.

The report was referred to the Finance and Labour Relations Sub-committee for further discussion.
