Stratford Mayor says cyber-attack was “a learning experience for many people”

“A learning experience for many people.”

That’s what Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson is calling a cyber-attack in April that saw the city pay just over $75-thousand in bitcoin to have its systems restored.

A series of documents about the attack, including one with questions and answers and another with a timeline, was released by the city Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Mathieson says the payment was only made after the city obtained advice and direction to do so.

“It was made in consultation with our insurer who is ultimately responsible for the costs that are borne by this claim, so we don’t enter into those types of decisions without seeking their guidance and of course their advice.”

The city says no personal information was compromised during the attack which lasted around two weeks.
