Stratford Police issue warning over Service Canada scam

Stratford Police are issuing another warning about a scam making the rounds.

Last Friday, they say a 38-year-old woman from the city came to police headquarters and said that she had been defrauded of $5-thousand through a scam involving Service Canada.

Police say the woman got a call from what appeared to be a Service Canada phone number.

She was told that her Social Insurance Number had been compromised and that she needed to pay them $5000 in bitcoins.

The female sent the money as requested, but upon receiving a second call demanding another $25 000, she realized that she had been the victim of a scam and she reported the scam to police.

You’re being reminded that no government agency, or legitimate business, will ever contact you to demand money over the phone and they will also never demand payment be made through bitcoin or gift cards.
