GFO responds to regulation of pesticides

The Ontario government announced last week that it will begin consultations on a new system for the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in the province.

This is in response to the declining bee populations.

The Grain Farmers of Ontario are unimpressed.

Henry Van Ankum is Chair of the Board and a farmer based in Alma Township.

He says the announcement blindsided the organization.

He says the announcement caught them by surprise and there still hasn’t been a meeting with the government.

Van Ankum says any move to ban neonicotinoids would put Ontario’s farmers at a competitive disadvantage to the rest of North America.
