South Huron Mayor calls shooting in Exeter a “very isolated incident”

South Huron’s Mayor says the area is still a very safe place to live, work and play.

George Finch says he can’t say much about an incident in Exeter on Tuesday night that saw a 44-year-old man die after being shot by police.

First responders were called to a home on Simcoe Street around 6:30 Tuesday night and the Special Investigations Unit says when police arrived, a man came out of the home armed with an axe.

Two officers firing at him, shooting him several times.

Mayor Finch says the incident is a very isolated one and people in the area are going on with their daily lives.

“It’s been very quiet in the community, the police are doing a great job as have all the other emergency services workers.”

Wade Vanderwal was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead and the SIU continues to investigate.
