Fire Departments warn “Get Out and Stay Out”

East and West Perth fire departments remind the public to not re-enter a burning building under any circumstances.

Following two incidents last week involving someone going back into a burning building, the regions’ fire departments are urging people to Get Out and Stay Out in case of fire.

Fire Prevention Officer for East and West Perth Fire departments, James Marshall told MyStratfordNow.com that there is no reason to go back into a burning building under any circumstance.

When asked what to do if you see a fire, Marshall answered, “We request that people plan their escapes, we tell them to get out and stay out and we have them have a meeting spot outside where they can meet and wait for the fire department.”

“If you can explain to the fire crews as they arrive that you are missing a person, this is where they were last seen, then we will go in and that will be the 1st thing that we will do is go and find that person and bring them out,” Marshall said.

Marshall reminds residents the fire department will put off any suppression efforts until they know that everybody that can get out is out.

“It’s totally a fluid environment, you can go in (into a property on fire) and take one breath and be on the ground.”

Marshall added, “If you are not nervous going in (a fire) even with full gear and full training then you are complacent.”
