Stratford man tasered after reaching for officer’s pistol

A Stratford man faces charges after a struggle with a city police officer.  Stratford Police was called to a residence on Home Street on Sunday for a man who had consumed a large amount of cannabis edibles.

When police arrived, they found the 40-year old man on the ground in his underwear.  When the officer and paramedics tried to help him, he became combative and assaulted the officer.  The officer tried to get control of the situation but the man tried to get his pistol out of his holster.  The officer tasered the man and arrested him.  There were only minor injuries to both the officer and the man.  The man was taken to hospital and released and faces charges of Assault Peace Officer, Assault with Intent to Resist, and Attempt to Disarm a Peace Officer.

During the investigation, police discovered the man had consumed a full 185-gram cannabis chocolate bar, which is well above the recommended amount of that product. The Stratford Police is hoping that this incident can act as an important reminder to follow Health Canada’s recommendation of “Start low and go slow” when it comes to cannabis edibles. Be sure to read labels carefully and be patient when consuming cannabis edibles as they may take up to two hours to take effect
