UPDATE: Missing swimmer located deceased at St.Marys Quarry

UPDATE: 3:03 P.M.

BREAKING: Update from Stratford Police on the missing person at the St Marys Quarry:

The 63-year-old missing person has been located, deceased, in the quarry and has been removed from the water. The family of the deceased has been contacted and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all loved ones.

As of Monday morning, the St. Marys Quarry was closed for the remainder of the 2020 season.

Stratford Police Service has advised municipal staff the Quarry must remain closed until a coroner’s report is received, a process that can take up to two weeks or longer.

The closure also allows for support and protection for quarry lifeguards and staff as needed.

Refunds will be provided for any advance registrations that have been made, as the Quarry would have been scheduled to close on Monday, Sept. 7.

The search continues for a 63-year-old man believed to have drowned in the St.Marys Quarry.

The Town of St.Marys posted on Facebook that the man from the Kitchener-Waterloo area was snorkeling in the water Sunday evening when his family reported him missing.

They say 911 was called immediately and lifeguards began a search with help from firefighters but the rescue operation was called off around 6:30.

Stratford Police Constable Darren Fischer says the search will continue Monday.

“We’re awaiting the arrival of the Ontario Provincial Police Underwater Search and Rescue Team who will continue an advanced search under the water here at the quarry.

Fischer says the man, who has not been identified, went to the quarry on a regular basis to snorkel.

He says the man was at the quarry with his wife and some other people at the time.

The quarry is closed and the public is being asked to stay from the area due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
