Stratford City Council put decision on proposed glass plant on hold

Stratford City Council is putting a decision on a proposed $400-million glass plant on hold.

In a statement, council says it continues to receive feedback on the proposed development and cost sharing agreement with Xinyi Canada Glass Limited.

However, they say given the ongoing Ontario lockdown and the emergency stay-at-home order that began Thursday, they will not be making a decision on the proposal at this time.

They say the focus on the health and safety of citizens is their top priority and they add they will provide appropriate notice to the public when the matter is being brought forward.

In response, Xinyi says they are disappointed with the decision, given the growing support for the project.

The company says the proposed facility promises to be of great benefit to Stratford, notably in these difficult economic times.

They add they will undertake to keep an open dialogue with local and provincial officials regarding the future of the project, and with the community at large.
