Presumptive COVID-19 variant identified in Huron Perth

A presumptive COVID-19 variant of concern has been identified in our region.

Huron Perth Public Health says the confirmed case of the virus has a presumptive screen for a variant which means it probably is one.

They say genomic sequencing, which takes around two weeks, is needed to confirm if it is a variant and it’s in a person who has a history of international travel who is now isolating at home along with their close contacts.

HPPH Director and Incident Manager Donna Taylor says her team is ready to deal with any variant’s that might be in the area.

“I think the team has had lots of opportunities to pivot and to be flexible and adaptable to the new things that are coming our way.”

Taylor adds the genomic sequencing will also determine, if it is a variant, which one it is.
