2020-21 season officially cancelled by Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League

The 2020-21 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League season has been officially cancelled.

In a release, the league says it made the “difficult and unfortunate” decision to cancel the season after the Ontario government issued another “Stay at-home” order.

They say that means there’s simply no way of completing any kind of meaningful season, with all recreational facilities closed to the public and most towns or cities in the process of taking their ice out.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has been devastating to all Ontarians for so many reasons. Our front-line workers have certainly endured the greatest challenges and losses but our devoted athletes, coaches and staff who live for the game have lost as well,” said GOJHL Commissioner Brent Garbutt. “At this time, we will focus our attention on planning for a successful return in the 2021-22 season, knowing full-well that we are not yet out of this pandemic and there will be more obstacles to overcome in the future.”

The league is thanking all the players, parents, sponsors, volunteers and fans for their continued support and understanding through these difficult times.

They say they look forward to seeing everyone back in the arenas in the fall.
