More COVID-19 patients expected to be moved from the GTHA to Stratford

More COVID-19 patients from Toronto are anticipated to be on their way to our region.

Andrew Williams, the President and CEO of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, says a third COVID-19 patient will be coming from the Toronto area to the intensive care unit at the Stratford General Hospital while a fourth patient with the virus, who doesn’t currently require intensive care, is expected to fill one of the medical beds at SGH.

The moves are coming because Toronto area hospitals are overflowing with patients suffering with COVID-19.

Williams says it’s a very fluid situation and they are opening up more capacity at SGH.

“We have been given approval to open three additional intensive care unit beds and the way we’re able to do that is by reducing our scheduled work in our OR and we’re redeploying staff from our OR into our intensive care unit.”

Williams adds the situation is changing frequently and they are in direct contact with hospitals in the GTHA.
