Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson says the discovery of children’s bodies at a former residential school in British Columbia is heartbreaking.
Mathieson says the discovery shows the school system was a systematic failure and he says we all have an obligation to look after our children.
He’s calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to declare a national day of mourning to honour the 215 lives and he adds doing so would be the start of the country recognizing our shortcomings over what happened.
Mathieson says he’s heard lots of feedback over what people want to see happen in response to the tragedy.
“I believe municipal governments across this country have heard about it in the last day or two from their residents and that all the communities will do what they can to raise awareness with regard to it and to ensure that government institutions are held to account.”
Flags across Stratford and throughout the area have been lowered in recognition of the lives that were lost.
