Huron Perth’s Medical Officer of Health says schools should be among the last to close and the first to reopen.
Dr. Miriam Klassen’s opinion comes after Premier Doug Ford announced students will finish the year doing remote learning.
Klassen says she recognizes the government has to weigh the risks and challenges and make challenging decisions.
However, she says considerations shouldn’t just be made over the risk of disease transmission but also what other risks are associated with keeping schools closed.
She says reopening schools right now is manageable and the health unit was ready to assist.
“We know that school closures can affect families and are affecting families negatively and create ripple effects for both children and their families.”
Dr.Klassen says staff will continue to prepare for the safe reopening of schools in the fall.
