Community Equity Action Team aiming to improve equity, diversity and inclusion

A new committee is aiming to improve equity, diversity and inclusion in the community.

The Stratford Police Services Board Community Equity Action Team was created late last year and two community meetings, one last week and one Tuesday night, where held where residents had a chance to learn about how the team will operate and its goals.

The SPS Board says the team is committed to strengthening public trust by bridging relationships between the SPS and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour communities.

Stratford Police Chief Greg Skinner, part of a steering committee helping form the team, says he wants to help the department improve its relationship with everyone in the community.

“I’ve been a police officer for 34 years, I didn’t become a cop to be able to abuse my position and authority, to use force against others, to target certain groups and hold them more accountable for their actions than others, I became a cop to help people.”

Applications to join the committee are open until September with their first meeting planned for November.
