Police investigating after shotgun found in Thames River

Stratford Police are searching for the owner of a shotgun that was fished out of the Thames River.

Shortly after 9:30 Sunday morning, police say they received a report from a male who was fishing in the Thames River at Milt Dunnell Park, in the Town of St Marys.

They say the man had reeled in a shotgun from the river later identified as a J.C. Higgins Model 20 – 12 gauge shotgun.

Police say the gun was modified to include a pistol grip handle and sawed-off barrel and there’s no serial number on the firearm as it is believed to have been manufactured prior to that requirement.

The firearm was wrapped in a 2XL black sweater when it was pulled from the river and was found to be heavily rusted.

It’s not known how long the gun was in the river and police are trying to identify its owner.
