Dr.Klassen says Knollcrest Lodge COVID-19 outbreak reminds us pandemic isn’t over

Huron Perth’s Medical Officer of Health says the fatal COVID-19 outbreak at Knollcrest Lodge is a reminder that the pandemic is still happening.

Three residents at the long-term care home in Milverton have died and there have been 12 confirmed cases with seven in residents and five in staff.

Dr.Miriam Klassen says it’s also a reminder of how important it is that we protect our most vulnerable.

“In this case, what happened is that the highly transmissible Delta variant caused an outbreak at the same time that immunity from vaccination was waning, just at that five month mark, just before we were starting booster doses for these residents.”

Officials say there is a vaccine policy in place for staff but they aren’t currently mandatory.

Dr. Klassen says 95 per cent of residents and over three quarters of the staff are vaccinated.

Residents were starting to get their third booster shots after the outbreak began.
