Stratford Festival legend Martha Henry passes away at 83

A Stratford Festival legend is being remembered.

Festival officials say Martha Henry has passed away from cancer at the age of 83 and just twelve days after her final performance in Three Tall Women.

The first graduate of Canada’s National Theatre School, Henry joined the Stratford acting company in 1962 and was with the Festival for 47 seasons.

She was awarded five Genie Awards, two Betty Mitchell Awards, a Toronto Drama Desk Award, a New York Theatre World Award, three Gemini Awards and seven honorary doctorates during her career that took her across the country and abroad.

A memorial for Henry will be held at the Stratford Festival at an appropriate time and the first Shakespeare production at the Tom Patterson Theatre will be dedicated to her memory.
