Scams targeting elderly people still circulating in the Stratford area

Staff at a St. Marys bank are being credited with preventing an elderly customer from being scammed out of $10,000.

Shortly after 12:30 in the afternoon on November 8th, Stratford Police say an 83-year-old victim went to the BMO after they got a phone call from a person posing as their grandson.

Police say the scammer had convinced the victim that he was in jail in Toronto and needed the money to be released from custody.

Thanks to the right questions being asked by the bank teller, police say the scam was figured out and SPS was called.

Police are crediting bank staff with saving the victim thousands.

You’re being reminded to be wary of potential scams and to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre if you suspect one.
