Police: Two people suffer burns after tent they were living in catches on fire

Police say two people suffered burns after the tent they were living in caught on fire in Stratford.

Stratford Police says they were contacted shortly after 5:30 Saturday morning about a man and a woman who appeared to be in distress at the east end of Douro Street.

Officers went to the area and learned the couple and their two dogs had just escaped after a fire in their tent.

Both were transported to the Stratford General Hospital with a 48-year-old woman later transported to a London hospital with 2nd and 3rd-degree burns.

The man was later released from SGH with minor burns.

Police say the couple are known to be homeless and had been living in the area for several months and provided with supports.

It’s believed that the fire started accidentally and was not the result of criminal activity with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office now investigating the cause.
