Staffing shortages expected to continue at area hospitals

Staffing shortages are expected to continue at hospitals in our region over the summer.

Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance officials say despite the efforts of all staff and physicians, and after a very challenging two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to staff all programs and services.

They point to the St.Marys Memorial Hospital having to close its emergency department for a few days earlier this month as evidence of the shortage.

All hospitals have been asked to come up with a coordinated summer planning overview to help predict staff availability.

It’s hoped the plan will identify where there are concerns about staffing and ensure that necessary contingency and communication plans are in place.

“Our commitment to providing high quality, safe health care services will be balanced with the availability of resources and respect for the wellness of our teams,” says Andrew Williams, President & CEO. “Where service adjustments become unavoidable, often at the last minute due to either unplanned staff absences or high bed occupancy, our commitment is to make sure that all health care partners and communities are aware. This includes knowing plans that are in place to ensure continued service access through adjacent organizations.”

You’re reminded to always call 9-1-1 in emergency situations but, if it isn’t an emergency, you’re asked to consider using other resources including Health Connect Ontario.
