SIU: Stratford Police officer committed no criminal offence in connection to infant’s death

A Stratford Police officer has been found not responsible for the death of an 18-month-old baby.
First responders were called to a home on Downie Street on the morning of February 16th, 2021 and when they arrived they found a child without vital signs.
He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says an SPS officer had information raising concerns about the child’s welfare weeks earlier.
With that known, the police watchdog started an investigation to determine if police could have intervened to prevent the death before it happened.
In his final report, SIU Director Joseph Martino ruled that while the officer in question had fallen short in his duty of care towards the child, the officer’s conduct did not transgress the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law.

The SIU is a civilian agency in Ontario responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
