Police: Perth East victim loses $940 in computer scam

Police say a Perth East resident has lost $940 after they fell victim to a computer scam.

Perth County OPP says they were contacted by the victim just before 9 a.m. on Monday.

Investigators say they determined that the victim had received a windows pop-up message on their computer last Saturday stating that the device was infected and telling them to contact the number provided to have the issue fixed.

The resident gave the suspect remote access to their computer where their personal information was compromised.

They also provided a credit card number and were billed $940.

You’re reminded to never allow anyone to access your computer unless you called them first.

You should also never give out personal, banking, or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure with whom you are dealing with.
