Police: St.Marys victim loses $16,000 in ‘grandparent scam’

A St.Marys resident is out $16,000 after falling victim to a ‘grandparent scam’.

Stratford Police says they went to a home in the town on February 15th after the victim reported the fraud.

Police say the resident had been contacted by an unknown male who said they were a Brantford police officer and that the victim’s grandson had been arrested.

The scammer said money was required to release the grandson with a conditional discharge, meaning they wouldn’t have a criminal record, but that the victim was under an order not to tell anyone or they would be criminally charged.

The suspect went to the victim’s residence twice, once on February 9th and again on February 14th, and is described as a white male, approximately 5’8, with black hair, and a slim build.

They were wearing a medical mask and regular street clothes.

Anyone with video surveillance in the Salina Street North area is asked to check their video footage and report anything suspicious to SPS or Crime Stoppers.
